Emma and Stuart had originally planned to hike up a mountain for their engagement shoot–which sounded like a lot of fun, if a serious challenge as well. But at the last minute, they decided to do their photos a little closer to home, opting for nearby Shaker Village. Then, after the sun started going down, we hightailed it back to Stuart’s family home, which offered a nice view of the falling sun. We even hopped a fence, thinking this one tree out in the field looked kinda nice. As soon as we were done, however, and had hopped back over the fence onto his folks’ lawn, a pair of horses came screaming out of the dark and charged up to the fence, apparently none too keen on our little photo session. Never thought I’d have the beejesus scared out of me by horses. But there you go. You learn something every day.
Tami and Dan are building a beautiful home outside Georgetown, Kentucky. So what better place to shoot some engagement photographs as they embark on their adventure together? I really enjoyed shooting with them, and perhaps got a little too caught up in what I was doing, which caused an unfortunate blunder: As we were about to head out for some sunset shots, I inadvertently locked my keys (with all my gear) in my car’s trunk. Photographer Joe McNally likes to refer to himself as “num-nuts” and I think I’m due to borrow it for a while. At any rate, Dan’s AAA card came in handy, and an hour or so later, we were back at it, getting in a few final shots before the sun completely disappeared. Tami and Dan couldn’t have been nicer through it all, and I’m looking forward to making it up to them at their wedding in Louisville next May.
I thought it impossible, but there’s now evidence that the chasm that separates Louisville and Lexington college sports teams can be bridged: Jamie and Rick are living proof. Although Jamie maintains her University of Kentucky allegiance, and Rick’s pretty obsessed with the University of Louisville, the pair doesn’t let that little fact get in the way of a good time. And they are a terrifically fun couple—as our engagement shoot jaunt through Louisville quickly proved. And they have no problems kissing…a lot. Should be a fun wedding in Frankfort in November.
It’s a rare that shorts and hiking boots get the nod as wedding attire. But for Jen and Matt’s ceremony and reception at Natural Bridge State Resort, outside Slade, Ky., it was must have gear. And it came in handy: much of the day was spent climbing up and down trails, squeezing through rock crevices and hightailing it across mini-mountains. But it was a pleasure to be part of Jen and Matt’s wedding day. They returned to Kentucky from their home in Portland, wanting to tie the knot close to where they grew up and where their families reside. And they were just a lot of fun to be around, always enjoying each other’s company. And although Matt had some difficulty remembering the lengthy vows he had written during the ceremony, it didn’t matter once the wedding was over and the two newlyweds were strolling to their chairlift: everything he wanted to say came racing back out. It was really touching to witness.
