Victoria and Adam were married at the charming Aspen Hall in Harrodsburg, Ky. And though the day was marked by temperatures in the mid-90s (and humidity that you could swim in), the couple’s stretch Hummer provided welcome relief, thanks to its top notch air-conditioning. The couple had to change their reception plans at the last minute (flood waters hobbled their paddleboat), so they opted to make use of the backyard at Victoria’s parents house, where everyone quickly sought out any available shade. Still, it made for a charming wedding. And afterward, we revisited Keeneland (where we shot their engagement photos) for a few wedding portraits.

Emma and Stuart, who were married in northern Kentucky, had something up their sleeves when it came time to do the mash-wedding-cake-into-each-others’-mugs routine. In the photo above, a keen eye might catch the mischievous glint in their eyes—which, aptly enough, foreshadowed their next move: turning the tables on the maid of honor and best man. Gotta say it was mighty fun to witness—much like the rest of evening, which featured everything from a “wolf pack grew by one” best man toast to a rousing rendition of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Amanda and Ben chose a sunny, hot day to trek up a steep, snaking trail; but that’s the price of admission to a nice view. And the Pinnacles, just outside of Berea, delivered on the goods. They’ll be getting married at the trail’s base in October, so it was kinda fitting that they opted to do their engagement photography there as well. And we happened upon a couple of view-enjoying tipplers who were gracious enough to hold a few lights for us, once the sun went down. I was slightly uneasy at the thought of a nighttime descent back to our cars, but low and behold, Ben’s cellphone put out enough wattage to light a city block.

Shawna and Jordan both have ties to Eastern Kentucky University, so it was only fitting that we seized on that location for their engagement shoot. Even though I teach there—and stomp around the grounds most mornings with my photography students—the place took on a completely different feel in the late evening, which was a nice surprise. And Shawna and Jordan were game for anything that came their way, even raiding a batting cage over by Lake Reba. They opted to forego the batting helmets, which, all safety concerns aside, probably ended up being the right decision.

Tami and Dan celebrated their wedding at the beautiful Gardens at Ray Eden in Louisville, Kentucky. And I gotta say it was one of the loveliest events that I’ve had the pleasure of documenting. It was a great family affair, one that included not only their immediate families but also their airborne brethren (both Tami and Dan are pilots). And the party-crashing planes marked the occasion with several low-flying passes that had everybody giddy and gazing skyward just as the couple were exchanging their vows. I can’t say I’ve ever witnessed anything like it. And it just reinforced the sense that something pretty amazing had just happened.
